ABOUT  |  Beth Hawthorn

Beth Hawthorn is an independent graphic designer located in Robert’s Creek, British Columbia. After graduating from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Arts and travelling throughout Asia, Australia and New Zealand, she started a design business with her husband in Vancouver. 10 years ago they relocated to Roberts Creek and she now focuses on serving clients from both Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.

Schooling and Experience

Beth spent her youth living in small BC towns, in addition to three years in the Philippines and eventually settling in North Vancouver. After graduating from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Arts, Beth lived and travelled abroad for two years. The first year consisted of living in the heart of Tokyo where she taught English to Japanese students and soaked in the Japanese love for craft, design and architecture. She then traveled through SE Asia, on to Australia and New Zealand and eventually returned home to start the next phase of her life pursuing the arts.

A Creative Venture

In 1996, Beth and her life/business partner Robert Studer started a creative company called this is it design. They pooled their energies to create uniquely designed homewares using glass, wood and stainless steel, exhibiting and selling across the globe. Shows took them to NYC, San Francisco, Tokyo and London, England. Over time they shifted to producing a broader spectrum of work ranging from large architectural sculptures, public art, functional products, lighting, contemporary craft, exhibition design and curation, as well as brand envisioning and graphic design. Their client base consisted of architects, developers, contractors, interior and landscape designers, government, cultural galleries, small business and organizations.  thisisit.ca

A Move out of the City

In 2006, with a growing family, they moved their home and business from Vancouver to Robert’s Creek, as it was time to create their dream life – a quiet place to call home, create an inspiring studio / creative space from which to work and enjoy watching their family grow. The studio was primarily built using reclaimed building materials. It is a gem and a wonderful space in which to work. Travel is still important – in 2014 their family took a year long trip through SE Asia – Thailand, Malaysia, Bali, Cambodia and Laos.

Fast Forward

Currently Rob and Beth work independently on projects from their design studio. Beth spends her time collaborating with clients on their brand creation and development, hosting a super stylish and cozy airbnb called the ART LOFT, crafting with clay, textiles and being the best mom she can be.
