Ready for a creative and social gathering? Join us on a Roberts Creek property to explore traditional rug hooking in a modern way.  In this class you will discover punch needle hooking and take a piece home with you at the end.

Rug hooking dates back to the early 1800’s in the Canadian Maritimes and New England. It was a craft for the poor, creating rugs with simple tools and repurposed materials such as burlap bags and used clothing to help warm up the rustic accommodations. As each rug was crafted with the materials on hand, the art of rug hooking was a form of self expression at a time when women’s voices were rarely recorded.  In the 1880s, the punch method was invented and is currently “having a moment” in the creative world. It’s a simple, quick to learn, easy to access, fibre art form.

The class will teach the fundamentals of punch needling and will provide you with the materials to make one 8” circular wall hanging to take home. Materials include an 8” round single use bamboo frame, rug hooking monks cloth (pre stretched and glued in the frame), and wool yarn. For your use during the class, you will have design templates for your project and a punch needle and other notions. No need to bring anything other than yourself.  Come with a group of friends or come alone and meet new people.

This workshop will be held outdoors at the studio of Beth Hawthorn Ceramics in Roberts Creek. 1551 Lockyer Rd.  More information an photos of on the location:  http://bethhawthorn.com/the-space/
